The Causes of Hair Loss in Women
You’re not alone if you’re experiencing breakage, increased hair shedding or significant hair loss.
Hair loss in women is most often very gradual and is more easily affected by hormonal changes, medical conditions, and external factors. Hair loss in women is no less distressing than in men. More often women s hair loss is limited to the thinning of the hair especially around the crown area. A receding hair line is rare in women. It usually starts with the hair follicle becoming thinner, revealing more skin.
Hair loss or hair shedding is consistent within the hair growth cycle and it is normal to lose some scalp hair each day. The average human scalp has roughly 100,000 to 150,000 individual hairs and the normal hair growth cycle results in the loosening or shedding of about 100 to 150 hairs on a daily basis. New hair growth then emerges from these same previous dormant hair follicles, growing at the average rate of about half an inch per month.
Baldness or Alopecia happens when the normal pattern of hair growth is disrupted. The normal pattern of human hair growth is growing, resting, shedding and growing again. For a woman, thick, vibrant hair is our crowning glory, our vanity visible. Our culture strongly identifies femininity with a thick, silky head of hair. Society unfairly identifies dry, lack luster and thinning hair with old age, sickness and poverty.
Reasons for hair loss include physical, emotional, and genetic conditions. Hair loss can occur from many common causes that most women do not even think of. The number of women who suffer from stress and hair loss is growing. Stress leads to various health conditions which cause hair loss.
A woman’s hair is at its thickest by age 20. Once we pass 20, however, our hair gradually begins to thin, shedding more than the normal 100-150 hairs a day. For even the elderly woman, significant hair loss can threaten self image.
Female pattern baldness or Androgen tic Alopecia is the most common type of hair loss in women and is genetic in nature. The result is a shorter hair growth cycle, finer hair and excessive hair loss from shedding and breakage.
Coming off birth control pills and pregnancy can cause hair loss. Women may experience hair loss 2 – 3 months after having a baby.
Progesterone is another hormone that precisely targets the hair during menopause. It compensates by producing extra androstenedione, which prevents hair growth. Usually hair will return to its original thickness following menopause.
A healthy balanced diet, regular exercise, hydration and rest can go a long way towards preventing hair loss and maximizing the potential of your hair growth cycle.
Nutrition
Poor nutrition is often an underlying cause of hair loss as the hair is a reliable indicator of nutritional well being. Dull hair color or dry and brittle hair may be indicators of a deficiency in essential fats in the diet, oily hair may be a sign of a B vitamin deficiency.
Low-fat foods that rank high in protein, low in carbohydrates, can play a vital role in sustaining healthy hair growth and aid in preventing hair loss. Harsh chemicals may strip the natural oils from your hair and lead to breakage and poor hair growth. Dye, hair straightening and permanent solutions are highly destructive to the hair shaft and follicle as well as the delicate sebum balance of the scalp.
Be gentle with your hair. Allow hair to dry naturally rather than using a hair dryer. Wet hair is weak hair so handle with care.
Try not to constantly run your fingers through your hair, tug at the hair and avoid hair clips or rubber bands that pull at and break off the hair. Minimize the usage of mousse, gels and hair sprays. These products dry and weigh down the hair shaft and dull the natural luster of your hair.
Harsh hair treatment such as pulling with brushes, tight braiding and styling with irons and strengtheners can be a cause of female thinning hair.
Sun worshippers should make sure that hair care products have sunscreen properties to protect hair from the damaging affects of UV rays.
Hair loss is traumatic, however our hair is only part of who we are. Remember, that for some hair grows back as mysteriously as it disappeared
Finding what has caused your hair loss will greatly increase your chances of finding the right treatments to help re grow your hair.

Rogaine – Does This Hair Loss Product Really Work?
After it was accidentally discovered that Minoxidil can induce hair growth, the product called Rogaine was born back in 1988. At that time, Rogaine, which is essentially Minoxidil in a lotion form that is applied directly to the scalp, was only available by prescription and the active ingredient was a low 2%.
Fast-forward to 1995: The food and drug administration deemed Rogaine to be safe enough to be sold without a prescription in most pharmacies as well as standard grocery stores. This spawned the creation of similar generic products that also contained the ingredient in Minoxidil. The owners of such products eventually increased the active ingredient dosage from 2% to as high as 5%, and this was a smart move because the higher dosage actually created faster results so both the customer and the product owners were happy.
What causes Rogaine to work?
As stated above, Rogaine causes hair growth as a result of the drug Minoxidil. Although we know that Minoxidil works well, researchers are still unsure as to the exact reason why it can create strands of new hair to grow on areas of the scalp that have been bald for years.
One theory was that Minoxidil had an impact on DHT levels better in the blood. If you are unfamiliar with DHT, it is simply a form of testosterone that affects sensitive hair follicles as a person ages. However, it became known that Minoxidil had absolutely no effect on DHT levels.
The one characteristic that Minoxidil has on the body is that it helps in large blood vessels, commonly referred to as a “vasodilator”. But, again researchers are baffled because it is not proven that hair growth is caused by any vasodilators.
What we do know is that the Minoxidil reduces the speed at which hair follicles shrink and it also causes hair follicles that have shrunk to start growing full-size hair strands again. This drug also keeps hair that is currently in a growth stage to remain that way for an extended period of time. In other words, minoxidil can help keep hair follicles in the “anagen phase” of hair regeneration longer than it normally would have.
Most importantly, if your hair remains in this growth phase of the regeneration process for a longer period of time, the results are thicker and longer hair.

The Real Truth About Products For Thin Hair and Hair Re-Growth
If you are experiencing thinning hair chances are you are looking for help in restoring your hair to its past fullness. In this pursuit you will be faced with a myriad of products for thin hair all claiming to be the best. In this article titled “The Real Truth About Products For Thin Hair and Hair Re-Growth” we will arm you with the facts you need to know in order to make an informed and hopefully successful decision to reverse your hair loss.
What we perceive as hair is actually the hair shaft which is comprised of three layers; the medulla, the cortex, and the outer layer called the cuticle. It is the cuticle that protects the more sensitive medulla and cortex from damage. When the cuticle is stripped away, from excessive shampooing, blood drying, bleaching, or combining the hair becomes brittle and vulnerable to breakage. This can give the appearance of thinning. The good news is that this type of hair thinning is easily reversed simply by adopting the strategy of less is more. Shampoo less, brush less, and use less harsh shampoos and coloring agents. Products for thin hair that include natural oils such as tea tree oil, wheat germ oil, or almond oil work great for both healing the hair and conditioning the scalp, and are a good choice for this type of thinning.
A more serious concern is male or female pattern baldness. In the world of hair loss it is generally accepted that if scalp circulation is good, nutrition is adequate, and your over 100,000 hair follicles remain open and healthy, that hair growth will resume and hair loss will only be a temporary bump in the road no matter what the cause. Male and female pattern baldness effectively disrupts all three of the basic cornerstones of hair growth and re-growth. The culprit is the androgen hormone dihydrotestosterone or DHT which damages and ultimately shrinks hair follicles to a point where they are no longer capable of producing new growth. Thus producing a condition known as androgenetic thinning.
This is not an uncommon condition. In fact it is estimated that it accounts for nine out of ten cases of balding in men and one out of every four cases of thinning in women.
There are a number of over the counter products for thin hair specifically formulated to address this condition by inhibiting DHT production and accumulation, while attempting to open closed or damaged hair follicles. The most well known of these products for thin hair cause by androgenetic thinning is minoxidil (Rogaine).
In summary, determining the cause of your thinning or balding is a very important part of choosing the best solution out of the numerous products for thinning hair. Nevertheless, early action is very important, before advanced thinning turns into balding, limiting your once plentiful options to expensive hair transplant surgery.
In closing there are currently a handful of hair re-growth products (specially formulated for both men and women) which have been proven effective both in blocking harmful hormones and bringing the all important dead hair follicles back to life. These specially formulated treatments can be used both as a preventative tool, starting before hair loss becomes severe, or after loss of hair has become noticeable. Whatever the level of balding or thinning you are experiencing these products could be just what is needed to overcome this latest life challenge.

What Happens When Hair Follicle Growth Starts to Slow?
Stimulating hair follicle growth is an important part of encouraging new hair growth and making sure established hair stays healthy. As we get older our follicles start to shrink. As follicles contract the all important hair replacement cycle starts to become unbalanced with many more hairs being lost than are replaced. The inevitable result is obvious.
The average person loses between 50 and 100 hairs every day. As long as hair follicle growth keeps up with loss hair remains abundant. But somewhere between the ages of 45 and 55 this balance begins to shift, with more hair being lost than is replaced. If the imbalance is substantial, balding will start to be seen fairly quickly. On the other hand if the imbalance is minute it may take 4 to 8 additional years before balding becomes obvious.
At the root of this imbalance is lack of hair follicle growth with the most common cause being androgenetic alopecia or male or female pattern baldness.
Male pattern baldness is easy to recognize. Some men lose only some hair with an M shaped pattern on top of their head emerging. Others, especially those whose balding began early in life will likely go completely bald on top but retain hair in the back and on the sides. Male pattern baldness is responsible for nine out of every ten cases of progressive balding in men.
For women the news is slightly better. Approximately one out of every four women will experience female pattern baldness. While the basic mechanism is the same, the pattern of balding in women is much different. Female pattern baldness in women is generally seen as a general thinning without the receding hair line some prominent in their male counterparts. There are a couple of reasons for this difference in appearance; first, women have much lower blood levels of androgen hormones, specifically testosterone and second women have a different pattern of hormone receptors and enzymes on the scalp.
Both types of androgenetic alopecia stymie hair follicle growth through a combination of androgen hormone accumulation and heredity.
The most often used treatment to stimulate hair follicle growth is the drug minoxidil. While research has yet to determine exactly how minoxidil works what we do know is that it enlarges shrinking scalp follicles while stimulating hair follicle growth. In plain English it is able to reverse some the damage done to the hair follicles by androgenetic alopecia.
What next? There are currently a handful of hair follicle growth and re-growth products (specially formulated for both men and women) which have been proven effective both in blocking harmful hormones and bringing the all important dead hair follicles back to life. These specially formulated treatments can be used both as a preventative tool, starting before hair loss becomes severe, or after loss of hair has become noticeable. Whatever the level of balding or thinning you are experiencing these products could be just what is needed to overcome this latest life challenge.

The Facts About Rogaine
If you spend any amount of time on the internet searching for “rogaine hair thinning products”, or anything like it, you’re bound to find questions like, “Will Rogaine make my eyebrows grow back faster?” “Does Rogaine help to grow mustaches?” “Can I use Rogaine on my cat?”
There are a lot of misconceptions about Rogaine, beginning with the idea that it works like the hair tonics in the cartoons to immediately turn the user into a hair monster.
The good news is that yes, for most men, Rogaine does work as it says it will. The problem is that most people don’t know what Rogaine actually claims to do.
Rogaine’s active ingredient is a chempical called Minoxidil Topical Solution, which works to stimulate hair growth — very slowly. Hair regrowth can take up to four months to begin, and even then the hair grows in colorless and downy at first. It thickens and darkens into the natural hair color with continued use, but the process is not fast or easy. (Notice that this partially answers two of the three questions above, because Rogaine stimulates hair growth, but it doesn’t make it grow faster).
Most people who talk about Rogaine seem to think it makes hair grow wherever it’s applied. Rogaine’s own instructions have a picture of the actual spot where Rogaine is most effective: the vertex, or that bald spot many men get on the top of their head. Rogaine doesn’t actually work to cure receding hairlines or frontal baldness.
However, Rogaine can stimulate unwanted hair growth. While you may be able to apply it to a receding hairline forever without achieving results, it may stimulate hair growth on the back or face where it may not be wanted. (This is especially true of Women’s Rogaine, which may stimulate hair growth all over the head but can also cause facial hair to grow.)
Finally, most people think that Rogaine will regrow hair and then it will just stay put – balding problem solved! Unfortunately, this isn’t the case. Rogaine does stimulate regrowth, but only as long as it’s being used. When people stop using it, the regrown hair falls out within about 4 months. A commitment to having hair involves a pretty long commitment to buying and using Rogaine daily, and Rogaine explains that it should become a part of your daily routine.
Rogaine is an effective product, and people who feel strongly about restoring their hair should try it to see if it works for them. The odds are in their favor. But those expecting a quick fix followed by a long life full of flowing hair and no Rogaine application should probably reevaluate. (And please, don’t use Rogaine on your cat. If it’s dangerous for pregnant women, which it is, it is certainly dangerous for animals.)

How to Grow Hair Faster – Treat the Causes of Hair Loss at the Roots
Hair loss is nothing to be alarmed about, and happens to a very high percentage of the population. Still, it can be a frustrating occurrence to contend with. During any time in life, a big cause for hair loss is changes in hormone levels, which means to grow hair faster a man and woman can use hormones to battle their symptoms and grow a lush, healthy head of hair. There are many causes aside from hormonal reasons as well that hair may not be growing at the rate that one would like. Major shocks to the system or malnutrition cause hair to fall out.
There are two hormones that come into play when it comes to hair growth, estrogen and testosterone. Therefore for more rapid hair growth, you could take supplements of either of these two hormones. Estrogen is responsible for controlling the hair growth rate, and makes sure that is stays on the head for a lengthy period of time. By increasing the body’s estrogen levels, you can walk away with a head of thick, healthy hair. Testosterone is also a major player in the life cycle of hair growth, and changing levels of this are what lead to male pattern baldness.
Other causes of hair thinning or loss that should be addressed if a person wants to increase the speed of hair growth include health and psychological reasons. Stress or anxiety can lead to thinning hair, as can vitamin deficiencies. Taking time out to relax, including the possibility of alternative therapies including yoga and massage can go a long way towards reducing overall stress levels and helping hair grow back not only faster but stronger as well.
Visiting a health care professional to evaluate what your probable causes of thinning hair are is one good first step to take towards increasing hair grow rates. A doctor can help identify what the causes may be, and recommend products or treatments that will act directly on these causes and put a stop to the thinning. Growing hair doesn’t have to be a difficult process, but it is one that takes a little bit of time and effort. There is no miracle product that will get hair to grow immediately, but there are certainly oils and creams on the market that will help it to grow at a more rapid rate.
If none of these plans are working, there are of course wigs and hats that can be used to hide the problem; or you could shave your head completely and go for the bald look, which is actually in fashion. However these should be used after considering the myriad product options on the market that can help with the hair loss problem. A person can fight hair loss with de-stressing techniques combined with nutritional supplements or hair growth products that stimulate hair production. These are generally easy to use at home and can help raise overall feelings of self-esteem. By taking the time to do a little research into the causes of hair loss, you can help reverse the condition.
