PROVIDENCE, R.I. — People who like to enjoy nature outdoors can count themselves richer by $680,500, a gift from Uncle Sam.

Projects in eight towns and on Prudence Island will share the money, allocated from a 2005 act called the SAFETEA-LU, which stands for Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users.

The money, which will pay for 80 percent of developing, improving, building or maintaining trails, is being administered by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, but it came through the Rhode Island Department of Transportation.

“While the public often associates the Department of Transportation with larger projects such as the I-way,” DOT Director Michael P. Lewis said, “We also support many efforts focused on alternative forms of transportation. Though smaller in scope, these programs help reduce congestion and improve air quality.”

The following projects will get these amounts:

Bristol will get $100,000 to develop a fitness trail to connect to the “path to health” trail and eventually lead through forest, fields and protected salt marshes to the proposed Bristol Community Center.

Burrillville , $100,000 to develop the former New York-New Haven and Hartford Railroad right of way into a pedestrian path between Pascoag and Harrisville.

Central Falls , $100,000 to create a riverside trail, picnic area and overlooks, extend the boat dock and stabilize the banks of the Blackstone River near the Central Falls Landing Recreation Facility.

Providence , $100,000 to repair and reopen trails at the 88-acre Neutaconkanut Hill on the Johnston line and to install signs, benches and vandal-proof trash containers there.

Prudence Island Conservancy , $10,000 to buy mowers to maintain multiple-use trails on the island.

South Kingstown Land Trust , $7,300 to buy a utility vehicle to carry equipment and materials for trail maintenance on conservation land.

Warren , $63,200 to create a recreation area and trail head on town-owned land along the Kickemuit River known as The Meadows. The trails would include water routes for canoes, kayaks and fishing.

Warwick , $100,000 to built a path on the eastern shore of the Pawtuxet River in East Natick Village that will include canoe and kayak access.

Westerly Land Trust/Hopkinton Land Trust , $100,000 to connect trail networks for a greenway from the state beach at Misquamicut, through Hopkinton, and east through Burlingame State Park.
