Government Says Most People Getting Enough Vitamin D, Calcium

November 30, 2010 · Posted in baldness · Comment
David Goodhue – AHN News Reporter

Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – Most Americans and Canadians are getting enough vitamin D and calcium in their daily diets, according to new federal guidelines.

The Institute of Medicine said that most people up to the age of 70 need no more than 600 international units of vitamin D per day to maintain health. People 71 years old and older may need as much as 800 IUs.

For most children ages 1 through 3, 700 milligrams of calcium a day meets their needs for bone health, and 1,000 milligrams a day is appropriate for most children ages 4 through 8. Adolescents ages 9 through 19 need no more than 1,300 milligrams daily.

For most adults ages 19 through 50 and for men until the age of 71, 1,000 milligrams covers their daily calcium needs, according to the guidelines.

Women starting at age 51 and both men and women age 71 and older need no more than 1,200 milligrams of calcium a day.

As for vitamin D, 600 international units per day meet the needs of almost all adults in Canada and the United States. People 71 and older may need as much as 800 IUs a day because of potential physical and behavioral changes brought on by age, according to the guidelines.

According to the Institute of Medicine, greater amounts of food fortification and the rising rates of supplements have increased the chances that people are getting too much vitamin D and calcium. Too much calcium raises the risk of kidney stones, and too much vitamin D may cause heart and kidney damage.

Hair Loss – Cause, Prevention and Treatment

March 25, 2010 · Posted in baldness · Comment

The adult scalp contains about 100,000 hair follicles. Everyday the scalp loses about 100 hairs and they will grow back in 5-6 weeks. Starting at age 40, the levels of by-product prolactin of testosterone of men increases, stimulating the production of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase that causes the conversion of testosterone to gihydro-testosterones DHT causing our hair to grow back thinner or not grown back at all. This causes an androgenic alopecia hair loss problem, since DHT shrinks the follicles causing hair thins and hair receding at the forehead, crown and temple for men and thins over the entire scalp for women. What causes hair loss.

1. The Causes of Hair Loss

a) Aging
Human aging is the biological process that is unavoidable but controllable with healthy diet with complex carbohydrates, green foods, garlic, onion, water and juices that will help to decrease the aging process in some degree. It also helps to reduce the amount of DHT produced in our body, result in postponing hair loss to our scalp.

b) Mineral deficiency
Minerals such as calcium, iron, copper, chromium, iodine, zinc, and magnesium are necessary to maintain healthy hair growth. Mineral deficiency will reduce the chance to regulate the blood circulation that promotes healthy hair growth and thyroid hormones that prevent dry hair and hair loss as well as defects in hair color. Too much iron is toxic to your body. Be sure to talk to your doctor before taking any mineral supplement.

c) Oxygen deficiency
Oxygen deficiency in your blood weakens the hair follicles, leading to dryness of the scalp and hair loss. Uncontrolled diet that is high in saturated fat causes cholesterol building up in your arteries resulting in less oxygen in your blood stream. Also cigarette smoking and second hand smoke reduces the blood flow and increases the blood clotting activity of cells which would clog the blood flow and damage arteries causing oxygen deficiency and results in weaken of the hair follicles.

d) Side affects of medication taken
Some medications contains elements that might cause hair loss such as lithium, warfarin, heparin, and amphetamines. When hair loss is a side effect of a medication, hair growth usually returns to normal once the drug is stopped.

e) Genetic hair loss
Hair loss is due to heredity. It is passed down from generation to generation. Genetic hair loss appears predominately in men, but may also appear in a few select women.

2. Food to Avoid

Foods that can cause hair loss and diminish hair growth.

a) Saturated and Trans fat
Foods such as meat, poultry, and fried foods contain high saturated fat. Foods such as margarine, cheese, and butter contain high amounts of trans fat. These foods cause cholesterol to build up in your arteries and small veins in your scalp resulting in less oxygen being delivered to the cell in your body, including the cells on the follicles.

b) Foods that contain Aspartame and Monosodium Glutamate
Monosodium Glutamate contain chemicals that causes weight gain, increased appetite and also causes various kinds of health problems such as hair loss.
Aspartame contains toxic chemicals that make you gain weight, increases hunger and causes medical problems like migraines and poor blood circulation.

c) Smoking
As we mentioned in the previous article, smoking can reduce blood flow to the scalp causing hardening in the arteries, limit blood flow and make hair loss worse.

d) Artificial Color
Artifiicial color contains chemical compounds that take their toll on the body’s natural balance.
Specific foods to avoid include colored drinks, color-coated candies, gummy and chewy candies, and many colored cereals.

e) Preservatives
These are potentially toxic to the liver and kidneys that cause hair loss and prevent hair growth as we mentioned in the article “Hair loss part IV–regrow hair with Chinese herbs”.

f) Food Packaging
Polyvinyl chloride is a known carcinogen, and it’s often used as plastic food wrap. It is toxic with high amounts causing damage to the kidney and liver resulting in hair loss.

g) Salt
Eating too much salt can lead to fluid retention and increased blood pressure that cause less oxygen to be delivered to the body’s cells including cells in your scalp in result of losing hair.

3. Hair Loss Prevention and Treatment

I. Here are some important minerals that may help to prevent hair loss and promote hair re-growth:

a) Iron
Iron is involved in the oxygenation of your body’s red blood cells. It is essential for normal hair growth and maintaining healthy hair. If the amount of iron can not be replaced with food intake, iron deficiency will cause hair loss because of oxygen deficiency.

b) Zinc
It helps to secrete the scalp with much needed oil and avoid dandruff that may cause hair loss.

c) Copper
Study shows that these tripeptide complexes may actually be able to regrow hair, even in patients with total hair loss due to alopecia. Healthy tissue concentrations of copper lie between 1. 7 and 3. 5 milligrams. Everything else will cause hair loss.

d) B vitamins
The deficiency of B vitamins (especially B6, B3, B5 and folic acid) in your diet may lead to hair loss.

e) Biotin
Biotin works as an anti aging agent and helps to produce keratin in preventing gray hair and hair loss.
Sources of biotin are: whole grains, egg yolks, liver, rice and milk.

f) Vitamin A
Vitamin A is important for over-all good health. It’s also beneficial to hair follicles, as it keeps the hair root lubricated. Too much vitamin A might result in hair loss.

g) Vitamin E
Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant that aids effective circulation in the scalp due to increased oxygen uptake in blood, therefore it plays an important role in promoting hair growth and preventing hair loss.

h) CQ-10
Coenzyme Q10 (CQ-10) is an essential vitamin that provides our body with the nutrients needed to grow healthy hair. They also promote overall vitality, and contribute to beautiful skin and strong nails.

II. Here are some daily foods that might help to prevent hair loss and promote hair re-growth

Yogurt and soy contain high amounts of protein that is needed to maintain hair growth. Study shows that soy protein reinforces hair and stimulates its growth.

2. Dark green vegetable
Dark green vegetable contains high amounts of iron that are needed to restore oxygen levels in the blood stream as well as nurturing the body’s cells.

3. Whole grain products
Whole grain contains zinc which is needed to maintain healthy hair. Zinc deficiency can lead to dry hair and oily skin.

4. Essential fatty acid
Essential fatty acid can be found abundant in cold water fish. It helps to maintain healthy cholesterol and reduce triglyceride in result of increasing circulation of blood flow in our body.

6. Nut and seed
Nuts and seeds are fatty foods which are typically the best sources of vitamin E, an immune enhancing antioxidant and nerve protector. Deficiency of vitamin E can lead to skin disorders, dry hair and loss of hair.

7. Carrots
Carrots contain high amounts of vitamin A. It is an antioxidant that helps produce healthy sebum in the scalp. Having too much vitamin A can lead to hair loss.
There are many other foods that help promote hair growth and prevent hair loss, such as fruits, egg, spinach, and broccoli.

Be sure to talk to your doctor before taking large amounts of the above foods. There may be side effects, such as overdoses of vitamin A in carrot might result in hair loss.

Be sure talk to your doctor or dermatologist before taking minoxidil. It might cause rash to some patients.

2. Finasteride
Finastteride is an oral prescription medication. Finasteride is a synthetic hormone that halts hair loss and stimulates new hair growth. It is a medication that selectively inhibits the activity of an enzyme that converts the “male hormone” testosterone into a form that is active in hair follicles.

3. Rogaine
Rogaine is a clear alcohol-based solution and should be applied to a person’s thinning area with it’s supplied dropper or spray twice a day. It helps about 25 percent of men and 20 percent of women to grow back moderate amounts of hair very gradually, mostly on the very top of the head. They must keep using Rogaine indefinitely to keep the new hair.

4. Retin-A
Retin-A is only available by prescription in the US. In the right doses and when combined with Minoxidil it can be a hair growth stimulator. Studies shows that Retin- A can result in moderate hair growth in some patients.

5. Proscar
Proscar contains the same active ingredient finasteride. Proscar has the effect of lowering the hormone DHT, which interacts with bald vulnerable hair follicles and causes hair loss. By reducing the DHT in the patient’s body the finasteride in the Proscar proved to slow and even stop or reverse hair loss in many men.

WARNING Don’t Take Antioxidants

January 24, 2010 · Posted in hair loss · Comment

WARNING Don’t Take Antioxidants

Did You Know…

…that taking high doses of antioxidant supplements — such as beta carotene, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) and selenium — does not reduce the risk of acquiring diseases, but has also been shown to be poisonous to the human body and may even increase the risk of death?

As long ago as the 1950s, antioxidants became known as miracle supplements because they “reportedly” promoted good health and prevented a host of diseases, including cancer

and age-related diseases.  According to some estimates, approximately 50% of the adult population in the U.S. take antioxidants on a daily basis for this reason.

Here’s a wake-up call:  Every long-term study involving antioxidant supplementation provides proof that people get sicker — not healthier — when they take antioxidants.  In fact,

beta carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin E, taken individually or in combination with other antioxidant supplements, are associated with increased all-cause mortality. [Source:  The

Journal of the American Medical Association - based on 68 randomized trials with 232,606 participants (385 publications).]

In case you were wondering … this information is not just another propaganda employed by the medical and pharmaceutical industries to prevent people from using natural

therapies, or to deceive people into thinking that drugs are the only solution to disease.

Over the last several decades, supplement manufacturers (and even health practitioners) have urged people to take large amounts of antioxidants such as Vitamin C and Vitamin

E because scientists had observed that people whose diets were rich in fruits and vegetables had a lower incidence of heart disease, diabetes, dementia, stroke and certain types of

cancer.  They formed the hypothesis that since fruits and vegetables are a rich source of antioxidants (which neutralize free radicals in the body), then taking antioxidant

supplements would have the same effect.

That hypothesis has been proven wrong.  Here’s why:    http://scrnch.me/82ya4

Fruits and vegetables produce antioxidants for good reason — that is, to protect themselves from oxidative stress.  Without antioxidants, oxygen destroys food by combining with

elements and burning them up — hence, vitamin destruction in food (or decay) occurs.

However, dietary antioxidants have virtually no nutritional benefit to the human body.  Antioxidants such as ascorbic acid and tocopherols, for instance, are not essential nutrients

– and as such, they should not even be called vitamins at all.

While antioxidants serve their purpose WITHIN a fruit or vegetable, in the human body, they only disrupt normal oxidative reactions in the cell.  This is why they are dangerous

to consume (except in the minute amounts ingested from food).

In summary, if you want to stave off disease and premature aging, there is no substitute to eating fruits and vegetables that are rich in antioxidants instead of taking antioxidant

supplements.     http://scrnch.me/82ya4

Hair Loss Vitamin D

January 17, 2010 · Posted in hair loss · Comment

One interesting vitamin that get produced in the skin from direct exposure to the sun figures as another nutrient that helps prevent hair loss. Vitamin D aids in the regulation of calcium metabolism for stronger bones. It is an essential nutrient for growing kids whose calcium requirements for healthy bones can be significant in their growing years.

Most of our vitamin D requirement is produced by the skin when exposed to the sun. Some foods do contain the vitamin like cod liver oil, salmon, cereals and dairy products.

1. Vitamin D in Hair Loss

No scientific studies have yet to show any direct relationship between hair growth and vitamin D. But observations suggest that a deficiency in it results in rickets which can lead to hair loss. In addition, lab studies with mice deprived of vitamin D result in complete body hair loss.

Some experts believe that a deficiency in the vitamin when coupled with deficiencies in the fatty acids that convert cholesterol into useful “good” cholesterol, hair loss can occur. While lack of vitamin D has not be proven to result in hair loss, having the right levels can help maintain normal hair growth which is what is needed to neutralize excessive hair loss.

2. Vitamin D Risks

Vitamin D is another fat-soluble vitamin that is not easily excreted by the body when there’s too much of it. It is fat-soluble and gets stored together with excess fat and is known to exhibit toxicity levels that can harm the health of adults. Weight loss can result and even hair loss. Vitamin D over production can get phosphate and excess calcium deposited in some organs like the kidneys and other soft tissues that can result in calcinosis.

It is rare that a person gets to overdose on vitamin D unless he eats a lot of cod liver oil. Even over exposure to the sun doesn’t result in vitamin overproduction in the skin since the skin’s melanin content regulates vitamin D production.

Stop Hair Loss Due to Vitamin Deficiency

December 26, 2009 · Posted in hair loss · Comment

Zinc, iron, vitamins B, essential fatty acids, amino acids and other nutrients and supplements are responsible for hair growth. If these deficiencies and shortage occur, for whatever reason, it is likely hair loss. These irregularities can result from many of the problems mentioned in article, as well as an inadequate diet.

However, there are other cases and problem where hair loss can be a sign of a serious medical problem. One of the main causes of hair loss is temporary vitamin deficiency. Hair follicles require certain vitamins to carry out its function of constant regeneration and growth. If follicles remain deprived of these vitamins they will not be able to perform their normal operation and can result in hair loss.

Most of the time due to poor eating habits or disturbed metabolism we happen to be deficient in these vitamins. So, a change in eating habits or food intake is necessary to ensure adequate intake of vitamins needed for hair to prevent hair loss.

Some Vital Vitamins to Prevent Hair Loss

There are several vitamins that are extremely important to maintain a healthy head of hair. Hair loss can be caused by a vitamin deficiency in any of these nutrients. All that is necessary to reverse the temporary hair loss is to follow a good diet!

Vitamin A is a vitamin that promotes healthy growth of both cells and tissues in various parts of the body, including cells of the scalp and hair. A deficiency of vitamin A could lead to hair loss and dandruff, especially if the deficiency occurs for an extended period of time. For vitamin A you need, make sure to consume lots of leafy vegetables, colorful fruits, liver, eggs and fish oil.

Hair loss can be caused by a vitamin deficiency in one or more of three B vitamins These three B vitamins (specifically folic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12) are important for the creation of red blood cells and hemoglobin. Hemoglobin carries oxygen to the tissues, including hair cells. A vitamin deficiency could cause hair loss, due to the resulting reduced blood and oxygen to the hair. To get your B vitamins, lots of eating chicken, fish, whole grains, sugar and orange juice.

The vitamin biotin could cause hair loss. Although biotin deficiency is rare, has been observed in some cases. Biotin can be found in select foods, and is also produced by bacteria in the gut good. Most people who eat a healthy diet never experience hair loss as a result of vitamin deficiency.

What Else?

Other vitamins are important for growth and maintenance of hair and these include zinc, iron, vitamin C and copper. High doses of vitamin A can also result in temporary loss of hair.

Iron deficiency may be another cause of hair loss. Young women often have low iron due to changes in your body and your menstrual cycles. So enough iron in their diets or have an inability to properly absorb iron. A doctor can test your blood for iron levels and can treat this by recommending iron pills as part of their vitamin and mineral regiment.

Insufficient protein in your diet can result in malnutrition, which can affect hair loss. If you are on a low protein diet is that it may be the culprit. Your body will have the protein from your hair, forcing your hair into the telogen or resting phase. Hair loss then will occur two or more months later. This is not permanent hair loss and can be reversed with a healthy diet with protein.

Biotin

For people who eat a healthy diet, biotin deficiency is rare. As well as being biotin select food sources, biotin is also manufactured in our intestines by gut bacteria. In rare cases, however, biotin deficiency can cause hair loss. Daily supplementation of biotin resulted in the regular re-growth of healthy hair.

If you are experiencing deficiency of vitamins you should incorporate food items in their diet to ensure adequate intake of these vitamins would lessen the chance of hair loss.
